Cherry 'Stella'

From £108.00

Prunus Avium ‘Stella’ is a modern self-fertilising variety of cherry tree originally cultivated in Canada. The compact, heavy cropping tree is grown on a Gisela rootstock which is perfect for keeping plants more compact, easy to care for and manage while keeping the yield consistent and heavy during the fruiting season. The spreading branches carry dark green leaves and clusters of small, sweetly scented white flowers during the Spring followed by large, glossy dark red cherries during mid-Summer.

The cherries hold a refreshing, rich, sweet flavour and good texture perfect for eating fresh off the tree though they do tend to crack and split in wet climates. They are also great when used for canning or preserves.

Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and keep in full or partial sun. can be fan trained or grown free standing. Birds tend to eat the fruit, so some netting is advised. A hardy and reliable cropper with heavy yields.

'Stella' Colt (Semi-Vigorous) rootstock is suitable for pruning to a bush, a half standard or fans. It can reach heights of 4-5m in a 10 year period. Colt rootstocks can tolerate most soil types including clay and light, chalky soils.

'Stella' Gisela (Semi-Dwarfing) rootstock It can reach heights of 2-4m over a 10 year period. Gisela rootstocks is a fairly low maintenance as it flowers late (avoiding Winter frosts). Plant in moist, well drained soil and position in full or partial sun.
