Zantedeschia aethiopica

£56.00From £27.00

Zantedeschia Aethiopica is ornamental flowering plant with unique flowerheads and large, dark green foliage that is heart-shaped. Blooms are large and composed of a large creamy white bract which encompasses a golden yellow flower spike called a spadix.

Long-living perennial, Zantedeschia Aethiopica is excellent to use in areas where abundant moisture is a concern like in a marshy area or woodland garden. Great for naturalising an area, these African lilies offer distinct blooms with plentiful foliage. Grow in groups in beds, borders or containers for wonderful and plentiful flowerheads.

Zantedeschia Aethiopica is native to southern Africa in habitats near marshes, riverbanks and wetland areas and has naturalised in the western United States and western Australia. Zantedeschia Aethiopica is an ornamental perennial plant that is clump-forming and herbaceous. Reproducing by rhizomes or underground tubers.

Zantedeschia Aethiopica has large, heart-shaped or oval foliage with pointed tips with wavy margins and is dark green in colour. Tall and with large flowers, Zantedeschia Aethiopica has blooms that can span up to 15cm and are made of large, white bracts called spathes. Inside of the spathe is an elongated flower spike or spadix that grows up to 10cm in length and is a bright golden-yellow colour.

Plant Zantedeschia Aethiopica tubers at superficial levels allowing part of the tuber to be exposed. Maintain moist soils and humus rich soils are suggested for the best growth and moisture retention. One suggested planting methodology is to plant in baskets partially submerged in water at the edges of garden ponds and then bring indoors or to a protected environment for harsh climates. Or plant in marsh areas with exposure to full sun to partially shaded areas.

Zantedeschia Aethiopica is also a viable option for woodland garden settings and planting in beds and borders that are kept well-watered. Bloom times can vary but is able to produce throughout the late spring through the autumn seasons.
