Prunus 'Kanzan'

If offers all year round interest. In spring, the Flowering Cherry tree bursts with crimson flower buds that open up to reveal deep pink, open blooms with frilly edges. This abundance of double flowers hang off the pendulous branches and the new foliage makes an appearance in shades of bronze, peeking though the pink tones. As the leaves mature into the summer, they turn a rich green. Autumn sees the foliage burst into shades of burnt orange. This deciduous plant will lose its leaves in winter.

The Flowering Cherry tree is fully hardy and easy to grow. It will tolerate most types of soil but prefers not be planted in waterlogged or chalky sites. Plant in full sun to get the best out of the colourful leaves. It is ideal for city or suburban gardens as it is very tolerant of pollution. It has a vase-like shape when young but will grow with an upright spreading habit to reach around 6m at full maturity.

Plant the Kanzan alongside the lovely Royal Burgundy. They feature similar pink blooms but have contrasting leaves in wine red and green, creating a fabulous effect in an ornamental garden.
