Corkscrew Willow Hedging | Salix matsudana 'Tortuosa'
- Also known as Dragon's Claw Willow, this unusual and attractive deciduous plant can be used as a single species screen or as part of a mixed hedge
- Distinctive weeping branches and corkscrew-like young stems which curl in spirals, producing wavy, contorted leaves. It takes centre stage in winter, when the bare branches are exposed, but also produces colourful pollinator-attracting yellow catkins in spring.
- A fully hardy plant which will reach a height of approx 8m but can easily be maintained at 1-5m
- Corkscrew Willow will grow well in all soil types and sites, and is especially hardy in exposed, windy and coastal locations
- The young shoots are used in flower arranging - they last a long time as they put out roots in the vase
- This tree is native to China, but is named for the Japanese botanist Sadahisa Matsudo, who wrote the first modern books on Chinese plants in the late 1800s
