Common Elder Bare Root Hedge
Sambucus nigra, or Common Elder, is a bushy deciduous shrub or small tree. This native fast-growing elder is perfect for creating ornamental hedgerows with its finely-cut pinnate leaves that are almost black but turn yellow in autumn. It produces fragrant flat sprays of cream-coloured flowers in early summer followed by small, black, edible berries in autumn.
For best results plant the Elder shrub in moist but well drained soil. It can grow in pretty much all soil types and will even tolerate waterlogged, chalky soils. It prefers sunny locations or partial shade. I will tolerate hard pruning well to keep their size.
